1

Footing exposed after excavation of earth from outside face

2

Additional steel reinforcement up to plinth level, anchored in existing column and footing with shear connectors

3

Damaged column above plinth after corrosion treatment to the reinforcement

4

Externally reinforcing the column with fibre wrapping system, in progress trial repair

5

Column sprinkled with sand after completion of fibre wrapping

6

Cracks and cavities in the beam grouted repair

7

Flexural and shear strengthening of beam with fibre wrapping system well within limits)

Make OR Break Factor

Members inside the plant area could not be increased in size above plinth level because sharp corners were a hazard and thus not permitted.

THE CHALLENGE :

  • The original structure which was designed to be Ground + 1 floor, was now bearing the weight of another floor, that was added later. Moreover, some of the structural members were corroded, affecting the structure’s stability.

THE ODDS :

  • Repairs were to be carried out under operating plant conditions, which was only possible by isolating and barricading the area under repair
  • Water seepage from the foundation had to be continuously pumped away during jacketing of the footing

OUR RESPONSE :

  • We carried out RCC jacketing of all the footings
  • Post which, we grouted the cavities in the core concrete
  • All steel corrosion and concrete surfaces were repaired
  • We finally reinforced the RCC columns and beams with external fibre wrapping
